By now, we all understand that artificial intelligence is reshaping industries, but a critical challenge remains: How to properly secure these powerful and vulnerable systems. In our recent study at Aporia, involving over 1,500 AI engineers and security executives, 78% of security leaders agreed that protecting AI from cyber threats is not only complex but risky. AI engineers working daily to secure AI agents share in this challenge. The inherent nature of AI technology complicates their efforts, as traditional security approaches often fall short.

Why Securing AI is Difficult

AI systems present unique security challenges that traditional security methods struggle to address. In a survey of over 1,500 AI engineers, we identified several key pain points. Nearly 88% of security professionals are concerned or extremely concerned about AI systems behaving unpredictably. The inability to accurately predict how an AI model might react in different situations complicates the process of securing it, making traditional risk assessment methods less effective.

For example, Wired magazine reported that a group of security researchers revealed a new kind of attack that secretly commands an LLM to gather your personal information and send it directly to a hacker. This type of manipulation achieved a nearly 80% success rate and is merely 1 example of malicious security attacks that can bypass traditional forms of AI security, putting user information and companies at risk. These jailbreak and prompt injection attacks can lead to serious legal repercussions if carried out successfully.

Inadequacy of Traditional Security Tools

78% of security executives don’t believe that traditional tools, like encryption, access controls and manual code reviews, are sufficient for addressing AI-specific vulnerabilities like adversarial attacks and data poisoning. These types of tools don’t provide complete security for AI agents and often don’t protect against new security issues that are emerging regularly. 

Difficulty in Detecting AI Usage

A significant portion of professionals (80%) find it challenging to detect and monitor AI applications within their systems, which increases the likelihood of vulnerabilities being exploited. This difficulty stems from AI's black-box decision-making and integration complexities across various platforms.

Complexity of Security Integration

With 85% of respondents indicating substantial challenges in integrating AI security, it’s clear that specialized tools, knowledge and continuous monitoring are required to do the job. The process is both time-consuming and resource-intensive, which can lead to delays and missed vulnerabilities.

Real-Life AI Security Failures

The consequences of failing to secure AI can be severe. One alarming case occurred when ChatGPT exposed sensitive personal details about individuals, raising alarms about how easily attackers can exploit LLMs. In this case, the model did not need data scraping errors to reveal personal information; simply engaging with the model could surface private data it had been exposed to in training.

Another notable case involved Air Canada, where the airline’s AI-based chatbot incorrectly told a passenger that he was eligible for a discount that wasn’t available. The error led to customer dissatisfaction and legal repercussions for the airline.

These incidents underscore the critical need for implementing AI-specific security measures, such as guardrails that monitor interactions and prevent unauthorized access or data exposure. These mechanisms act as a vital safety net, safeguarding the model’s interactions and reducing exposure to vulnerabilities.

The Hidden Costs of Inadequate AI Security

Beyond data breaches, AI security failures can lead to adversarial attacks, intellectual property theft and regulatory violations. A recent study also found that 77% of organizations have experienced an AI-related security breach, leading to undeniable costs. These breaches risk significant reputational harm, invite regulatory scrutiny and often result in financial losses.

In industries like healthcare and autonomous systems, the consequences of compromised AI can be especially dire, leading to physical harm or even loss of life. Furthermore, companies that fail to secure their AI systems may face severe legal penalties, loss of trust and significant financial setbacks.

The Path Forward

The message emerging from this study is clear: Securing AI isn't just a technical challenge - it's a critical imperative for the future of technology and business. As AI continues to integrate deeper into our digital infrastructure, the need for robust, AI-specific security measures is becoming increasingly urgent. One key approach advocated by leading AI professionals is implementing AI guardrails to prevent unauthorized access, restrict risky behaviors and ensure that models operate within secure, predictable boundaries.

Industry leaders are calling for a fundamental shift in how we approach AI security. This includes developing new tools and methodologies specifically designed for AI systems, investing in AI security education and training and fostering closer collaboration between AI developers and security professionals.

Proactive measures and innovative security solutions, like guardrails, will be essential to safeguarding these powerful and vulnerable systems. As we stand at this pivotal moment in the widespread adoption of AI, one thing is certain: The race to secure AI is on and the stakes have never been higher.
