Omdia research: Next two years will be time of explosive growth

Global enterprise AI adoption has reached "critical mass" and is becoming self-sustaining, according to a new report released today by sister research firm Omdia.

It is a pivotal moment for AI adoption, with the market now in its early majority phase.

Around 20% to 25% of enterprises are scaling AI projects across divisions, Omdia projected in the report, “AI Market Maturity Survey 2022: Reaching Critical Mass."

This scaling of AI points to maturity of the technology's adoption: there is commitment to AI projects, with corresponding budgets and resources.

“The next two years will be a time of explosive growth for enterprise AI as an unprecedented number of enterprises seeking to operationalize AI begin their AI journeys,” said Mark Beccue, principal analyst at Omdia.

“Live AI deployments will likely double and funding for AI projects will grow exponentially. It will also be a time of instability for AI solutions (end to end, tools and platforms, SaaS solutions with embedded AI) – with surging demand, pricing will likely drop, and AI solution specialization will increase.”

The report surveyed 414 enterprises representing every global region, a range of company sizes by revenue and seven distinct industries.

Key findings:

  • Enterprises are investing in a range of AI use cases.

  • 91% of respondents were confident or very confident that AI will deliver positive results toward their business goals within the next 12–24 months.

  • 61% of respondents said their confidence in AI’s ability to add value to their operations has increased over the past year.

  • 55% of respondents have a dedicated AI budget.

What do the findings imply?

Global market of operationalized AI will accelerate rapidly over the next two to three years:

  • Number of enterprises with live AI deployments will likely double.

  • Number of enterprises actively developing AI projects will likely double.

  • Funding for AI projects will likely increase exponentially.

  • Market for AI solutions (end-to-end, tools and platforms, and SaaS solutions with embedded AI) will remain unstable.

With surging demand, new vendors will enter the market, and pricing will likely drop. Also, as AI gains success stories in the enterprise and its appeal grows, AI solution specialization is likely to increase to accommodate more industry-specific or horizontal use case needs.
