LONDON - UK-based AI entrepreneurs won awards for business innovation at the prestigious Lloyds Bank National Business Awards last night, demonstrating the increasingly central role for artificial intelligence technologies in the enterprise world.

Signal Media, providers of a content-powered business intelligence engine, are the inaugural winners of the first ever Fujitsu AI Pioneer of the Year Award. With over 10 of the FTSE 100 as clients, the company has more than quadrupled its revenue in the last 18 months. Its engine, known as Signal, uses AI-powered news and media monitoring to provide businesses with real-time information insights.

"AI has been described as the most important technology in the world today. It sits at the heart of the UK's Industrial Strategy and has the power to change the way people relate to technology and the way we relate to each other, which means its potential in business is vast," said Sarah Austin, Awards Director.

"We introduced the Fujitsu AI Pioneer Award in recognition of this, to reward businesses that are empowering and enabling people to thrive in a digital world and to celebrate those paving the way with AI innovation to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of the technology's evolution."

Meanwhile, Ross Harper, founder and CEO of London start-up Limbic AI, received the Duke of York New Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Founded only 13 months ago, Limbic AI is a small team of scientists and engineers seeking to understand the neuroscience of emotion using AI.

"We understand that intelligence goes beyond AI," they say. "For the first time, we enable developers to quantify how their users really feel. Emotions exist in a part of the brain called 'limbic' system. Changes here are linked to changes in heartbeat. Applying machine learning to biometric data collected by wearable devices, Limbic infers the emotional state of the user, allowing apps to become 'emotionally intelligent; for the first time."

With over 1,200 business leaders, entrepreneurs, politicians and journalists in attendance, the 17th National Business Awards were held on November 13 2018 at the Grosvenor Hotel in London. The ceremony was hosted by the BBC's Naga Munchetty and received a keynote speech from actress and campaigner Joanna Lumley. There were winners across 17 different categories, including Leader of the Year, which was won by Virgin Money CEO Jayne-Anne Gadhia.
