Future You

A new tool would allow you to meet your future self to improve your future self-continuity and wellbeing, using Artificial Intelligence.

Developed by researchers from MIT, Harvard, the University of California and Thailand’s Business-Technology Group, “future you” offers a short, interactive, single-session digital chat with the user's future self.

The system uses a large language model drawing on information the user provides to help generate a relatable, virtual version of themselves at age 60 that can answer questions about their future life as well as offer advice and insights on future paths.

“Our system allows users to chat with a relatable yet AI-powered virtual version of their future selves that is tuned to their future goals and personal qualities,” the report said.

The system generates what the researchers call a future memory or unique back story for each user and a throughline is then created between the user’s present age to age 60. Their “future you” also adopts an age-progressed user image.

The researchers said this is the first study successfully demonstrating the use of personalized AI-generated characters to improve users’ future self-continuity and wellbeing.

According to the researchers, the study of future self-continuity is an emerging field and it has shown that “high future self-continuity promotes better saving behavior, academic performance, mental health and subjective quality of life.”

The study said future self-continuity interventions help participants connect with their future selves through techniques including letter writing, method acting and virtual reality simulations.

The researchers found that after a brief interaction with their “future you,” users reported significantly decreased anxiety and increased future self-continuity.
