Since ChatGPT and other generative AI systems became widely popular and accessible, the discussion around their security risks has been significant. It is equally important to address the damaging consequences of unchecked bias.
AI bias occurs when an AI system’s training data is biased or not representative of an entire population, resulting in prejudiced outcomes. For example, an AI-powered application screening system could prioritize male candidates for certain jobs. Similarly, when given the prompt "people reviewing documents while surrounded by food," an AI image generator might produce an image where only the men are shown working while the women are depicted eating.

Ensure diversity: Ensure your AI governance organization is composed of a diverse pool of stakeholders. Consider demographics but also their role and depth of experience across the company to retain diversity of thought and unique perspectives in your model development and oversight processes.
Prioritize testing and optimization: Frequently conduct AI system tests to ensure optimal performance. Additionally, use continuous feedback to improve your model.
Promote user awareness and education: Ensure users are aware of the risk of AI bias, train them to identify bias and give them the necessary resources to provide feedback and remediate problem areas.
Maintain a human-in-the-loop approach: Have a model governance process that includes consistent and ongoing human oversight, for example, audits.
As with any new technology, the speed of adoption should not exceed secure, responsible and ethical use.
