Address Bias in Generative AI to Unlock Benefits While Minimizing Risk

Since ChatGPT and other generative AI systems became widely popular and accessible, the discussion around their security risks has been significant. It is equally important to address the damaging consequences of unchecked bias.

AI bias occurs when an AI system’s training data is biased or not representative of an entire population, resulting in prejudiced outcomes. For example, an AI-powered application screening system could prioritize male candidates for certain jobs. Similarly, when given the prompt "people reviewing documents while surrounded by food," an AI image generator might produce an image where only the men are shown working while the women are depicted eating.

For generative AI to be used effectively and work for your business, the technology must be used responsibly and ethically, and this includes without bias. To achieve this, it’s important to understand all the different factors that contribute to bias in AI:

  • Stereotyping: Human biases and stereotypes in data are not only perpetuated but sometimes amplified by AI systems, leading to unfair treatment.

  • Confirmation bias: Developers unconsciously favor data that confirms their own beliefs or assumptions, leading to biased AI algorithms.

  • Labeling bias: Humans inject their own biases when labeling data, leading to skewed training sets and biased models.

  • Representation bias: If certain groups are underrepresented in the development process, their perspectives and needs may not be adequately addressed in the results.

  • Cultural bias: Human cultural norms and values can influence AI systems, leading to biased decisions or interpretations that reflect the biases of the society in which they were developed.

  • Availability bias: Readily available data may be prioritized over less accessible information, leading to biased conclusions or recommendations, for example, news aggregator apps.

  • Feedback loop bias: Existing biases are exacerbated by reinforcing data patterns, creating a feedback loop that perpetuates inequality or discrimination.

Prevention Best Practices

Understanding different forms of AI bias is important so we build fair and effective AI systems. Here are a few leading practices to ensure your AI system is using clean data and outputting quality results:

  •  Implement end-to-end monitoring: Bias can be introduced at multiple stages of the data collection or model development process. It’s important to monitor and manage the model lifecycle, not just the beginning of the process.

  • Validate data: Watch for outliers and ensure everyone working on data activities, for example, data labeling, approaches data the same way. Prevent individual biases from entering at any point in the life cycle.

  • Stay within the intended scope: Use caution extrapolating data or models to use cases it was not designed to address.

  • Ensure diversity: Ensure your AI governance organization is composed of a diverse pool of stakeholders. Consider demographics but also their role and depth of experience across the company to retain diversity of thought and unique perspectives in your model development and oversight processes.

  • Prioritize testing and optimization: Frequently conduct AI system tests to ensure optimal performance. Additionally, use continuous feedback to improve your model.

  •  Promote user awareness and education: Ensure users are aware of the risk of AI bias, train them to identify bias and give them the necessary resources to provide feedback and remediate problem areas.

  • Maintain a human-in-the-loop approach: Have a model governance process that includes consistent and ongoing human oversight, for example, audits.

As with any new technology, the speed of adoption should not exceed secure, responsible and ethical use. Understanding the various forms of AI bias in generative AI and putting the aforementioned measures in place to mitigate them will help your organization harness the benefits of this business-changing technology while minimizing the risks.
