Ordering clothes online often seems like a preferable choice opposed to running around in a busy street or store, fighting your way to the fitting room or waiting in line for ages to pay for your item. However, very often the customer experiences that when they receive the item at home, it doesn’t fit. Whether it is too big or small you are now having to return it, which defeats the purpose of saving yourself from the stress of actually going to the store. 

No need to worry, Body Labs might have the solution as that is shared in an interview done with MarketWatch‘s Ellie Ismailidou. Here, BodyWatch’s Jon Cilley explains how they plan to solve this issue by scanning their customers through the assistance of AI.

“One challenge that’s always been in the retail industry, either whether you’re looking at online retail or in stores, is that there have never been an efficient way for retailers and brands to understand what their customers look like at scale”

“Returns cost retailers 643 billion USD per year, and 62 billion of those are because of wrong sizing”, Cilley says in the interview, explaining how 23% of consumers are returning both online and in-store.

“So what we really want to enable people to do is not only empower businesses to accurately not only understand at scale what their customers look like, but be able to size around them, to design around them, but then also to empower them to be able to virtually be able to try on clothing”.

To tackle this problem, BodyWatch uses a laser-scanning room, and the way their technology works is that they start with an essential baseline understanding of the human body-shape, which they do through AI that has been trained by scanning all possible body-shapes and poses, allowing them to reference that data to accurately recreate your full 3-D bodyshape.

“Cilley says: “We start with this baseline understanding in our software of what a human body-shape looks like and then the AI can take that information and find the areas that requires to fill in the blanks so we can integrate them into a series of applications, whether it is virtual try on, animation, digital design, 3-D-apparel design”.

BodyWatch then takes that information and correlate that data together to be able to provide sizing studies, population studies, etc.

According to Cilley this is very beneficial from an apparel design standpoint, as it allows them to correlate that information with the sizing information, and understand what an average size small look like, and how to modify measurements to be able to improve their target customers.

Does the future of retail require everybody to have a 3-D laser-scanner in their apartment?, MarketWatcher’s Ellie Ismailidou asks:

“So, in the future you don’t have to have a 3-D laser scanner in your apartment, you don’t have to go to a retail environment that might have a more sophisticated setup like this. You can do it from the convenience of a mobile application, your mobile phone or a webpage”, Cilley reassures their viewers.”S0, if we can actually make that easier, faster, it’s going to provide a tremendous amount of value, both online and in retail”.
