PALO ALTO - Stanford University is opening a new multidisciplinary institute geared towards AI for good, following an official launch hosted by Bill Gates on Monday.
The university-wide Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) aims to build on Stanford's pioneering history in artificial intelligence by bringing multidisciplinary collaboration to bear on this traditionally STEM-dominated field. It will serve as a hub for expanding AI expertise across the humanities, social sciences, business, law, and policy, as well as engineering, medicine, and technology.
Notable AI visionary Fei-Fei Li, former director of the Stanford AI Lab and former Chief Scientist of AI/ML at Google, will co-direct the new Institute with John Etchemendy, professor of philosophy and the former provost of Stanford University.
"AI is no longer just a technical field. If we're going to make the best decisions for the collective future, we need technologists, business leaders, educators, policymakers, journalists and other parts of society to be versed in AI, and to contribute their perspectives," Li said. "Stanford's depth of expertise across academic disciplines combined with a rich history of collaboration with experts and stakeholders from around the world make it an ideal platform for this institute."
The Institute will prioritize building partnerships with industry, governments, and NGOs that want to build a better future for humanity using AI.
