Promising better performance for video streaming, cloud gaming

Finnish telco equipment supplier Nokia is introducing a new service called AVA Quality of Experience (QoE) at the Edge, facilitating the deployment of AI-based functionality closer to the customer.

The service aims to empower communications service providers (CSP) to deliver new low-latency consumer services such as video streaming and cloud gaming, with reduced jitter and buffering.

For telcos, the Nokia AVA Telco AI Ecosystem creates AI solutions that can be delivered through the cloud, such as via Microsoft Azure.

“Today, many CSPs are keen to launch new low latency services to their customers,” said Dennis Lorenzin, head of network cognitive services, global services, Nokia. “With Nokia’s AVA QoE at the Edge, we bring AI to the edge, so CSPs can deliver personalized 5G experiences and guaranteed performance.”

AI in the network

Nokia says the deployment of its AVA algorithms on traditional network architectures has reduced Netflix buffering by 59% and improved YouTube performance by 15%.

The service enables automated, real-time actions to fix customer issues by using machine learning algorithms at the network edge.

A side benefit is the reduction of user plane data needed to feed machine learning models, resulting in the easing of the data burden on CSPs.

Nokia AVA is available in AI-as-service model that combines the data science, telco and cloud expertise of Nokia and Microsoft. It supports multi-vendor, open radio access networks, allowing the use of different components working together.

The introduction and evolution of Internet of Things and 5G technologies are promising an increasingly complex telco environment, opening the door for more AI-enabled services for CSPs as telecoms operators fine-tune their 5G strategies.
