The U.K. Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has signed an agreement with Google Cloud to collaborate on AI.

The agreement, signed at the AI Summit London, would open access between Dstl and the Google Cloud Marketplace. It also allowed Dstl to access and use Google Cloud’s AI technologies and processes.

Dstl would also be able to explore tools developed for civilian purposes and explore how they can be applied to defense challenges.

The parties are also set to create an AI research environment that covers tools and infrastructure, and talent attraction and retention.

“As one of the most transformative and ubiquitous new technologies, AI has enormous potential to transform societies,” said Dstl’s chief executive Paul Hollinshead. “Dstl’s collaboration with Google Cloud is one of the significant steps Dstl is taking to prioritize research, development and experimentation of technologies in line with our commitment to safe and responsible AI.”

“AI has potential to assist the ministry in a broad range of use cases, including cybersecurity, disaster response, and employee productivity. We look forward to helping Dstl in its commitment to using AI boldly and responsibly,” said Helen Kelisky, UKI, managing director of Google Cloud.
