Audi has become the latest automaker to integrate ChatGPT into its cars.

The German brand confirmed that certain models will incorporate the tech into its in-cabin voice-control system, following the example of stablemate Volkswagen, which has also introduced the AI-based tool on some vehicles.

Starting later in July, owners of around 2 million Audis made since 2021 and equipped with the company’s third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB3) will benefit from the new feature.

MIB3 originally debuted in the Audi A4 and A5 and is now common across the firm’s range.

In addition, new and future models with the E3 1.2 electronics architecture will receive ChatGPT, via the new “Audi assistant.” The first model to benefit is the recently launched Audi Q6 e-tron.

As with Volkswagen, the integration has been made possible via Massachusetts software company Cerence’s Chat Pro solution.

As a result of the integration, Audi is promising voice assistance that will go well beyond what was previously available, allowing much more natural conversations.

While users are currently able to control the infotainment, navigation and air-conditioning systems, in the future they will be able to ask more diverse general knowledge questions.

According to Audi, as well as enhancing the in-cabin experience, this brings safety benefits. “The ability to ask for information using natural language makes driving safer, as the driver never has to take their eyes off the road,” the company claimed.

On models with the new E3 1.2 electronics architecture, the Audi assistant is activated by saying “Hey Audi” or pushing a button on the steering wheel. If the assistant cannot answer a query on its own, it leans on ChatGPT.

Security concerns are addressed by the immediate deletion of questions and answers, and Audi also says that ChatGPT never has access to vehicle data.

In the future, even more advanced conversation will be possible. As the tech continues to evolve and learn, via large language models, it is claimed it will be able to provide specific information about the vehicle, such as what the correct tire pressures should be.

Marcus Keith, vice president of interior, infotainment and connectivity development at Audi, said: “With the seamless integration of ChatGPT into our voice control, we are combining the strengths of both applications.

“In addition to a range of voice-controlled functions, our customers will now benefit from simple and secure access to AI-based knowledge. This is the next step towards a best-in-class in-cabin experience in Audi vehicles.”
