Bloomberg reports that Anthropic is working on image recognition, an ability Claude lacks compared to rivals ChatGPT and Bard.
Unpublished wording in code on the company’s website reportedly references image recognition capabilities, including tips for chatting with Claude about images.
Giving Claude image recognition capabilities would help Anthropic keep up with rivals. At the time of writing, Claude only interacts with text. It can also handle documents like PDFs, even the free version, compared to ChatGPT which requires a subscription to access that ability.
With the reported update, Anthropic customers would be able to interact with Claude like asking it to identify cats in an image or compare two images for differences.
Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI staffers unhappy with the company’s dealings with Microsoft. After securing backing from Amazon and Google, its founders are now trying to compete with their former employers.
After securing billions in backing from big names in tech, Anthropic expects to end 2024 with $500 million in revenue, with its deal with Amazon seen as a driver of growth.
