Vanderbilt University Establishing College of Connected Computing

Vanderbilt University is building a college dedicated to computer science, AI and data science.

The College of Connected Computing will offer students study opportunities amid a growing demand for degrees related to emerging technology.

The new college will also collaborate with Vanderbilt’s other colleges on research in what the university calls a “‘computing for all’ approach.”

“Of all the factors shaping society, few are more influential than the rapid emergence of advanced computing, AI and data science,” chancellor Daniel Diermeier said.

“To continue to carry out our mission, prepare all our students for their careers and advance research across the university, Vanderbilt must contribute even more to the study, understanding and innovative application of these fast-changing disciplines.”

A search for a dean to lead the new college will start in the coming months.

The computer science college is the university’s first new institute since it and the Blair School of Music merged in 1981.

The new college’s departments, degree programs and research infrastructure will be formed based on recommendations from a university faculty task force.

Padma Raghavan, vice provost for research and innovation, will launch a working group to obtain input from staff on how to expand the university’s computing resources.
